Mousie Memorial Veteran Winners 2024

This award is presented in memory of a very special pony who competed in Horse Agility well into her later years.

Rescued off the moors by a rescue group (now defunct) Mousie was handled slowly and carefully by the charity People4ponies who specialize in rehabilitating wild and traumatised ponies. (www.people4ponies.co.uk)

Despite having had her ears mutilated by the previous owners (to identify her as   belonging to them) Mousie became a trusting loving pony. By this time she was at least 20 years old.

Because Mousie legally belonged to the original rescue charity once she had been handled she had to be returned as part of the agreement.

Unfortunately the rescue group did not believe that keeping ‘older’ equines was worth their time and despite the fact that Mousie was fit and well and had a number of people who could give her a home for life she was euthanised without warning.

People4ponies (of which Vanessa Bee is a patron) were devastated at this news as they keep any ponies until they are ready to leave this earth. They have a 42 year old pony currently happily living with them, another refugee from a well known         national animal charity who said she wasn’t worth keeping her alive 17 years ago!

However it was too late for Mousie but People4ponies and The Horse Agility Club wanted to honour her and so the Mousie Memorial Veteran Award was started eight years ago and goes to the highest placed veterans in the Club.

The Awards for 2024 went to:

OLHA Lisa Hickman and Lilly (21)

Liberty Cup Mara Ashby and Prince (22)

Walk Only Ruth Müller and Chili (27)

Equagility Dawn Hernandez and Dechali (22)

The Mousie Memorial Veteran Award has a special place in my heart as I adore and cherish all the equine seniors. Grateful that our “old lady” Chili has now won this award for the third time. Congratulations everyone and a big thank you to all who make this possible.
